How it works

Floor screed volume equals area multiplied by thickness. For a 1:3 cement-to-sand mix — standard for Nigerian floor screeds — each cubic metre of wet screed requires approximately 4.4 bags of 50kg cement and 1.32 m³ of sharp sand. The screed is applied over a concrete structural slab or hardcore.

Formula

Volume (m³) = Area × (Thickness / 1000)
Cement bags = Volume × 4.4
Sand (m³) = Volume × 1.32

Tips for accurate results

1Minimum screed thickness over a structural slab: 40mm (unbonded) or 25mm (bonded with SBR slurry).
2Use sharp sand — not plastering sand — to avoid shrinkage cracks after drying.
3Cure the screed for at least 7 days before laying tiles to prevent hollow spots.
4For large areas, consider a pump-applied flowing screed for a flatter, faster finish.
