10% waste covers standard cuts and breakages; increase to 15% for diagonal laying

How it works

Tiles needed equals total area divided by the face area of one tile, multiplied by (1 + waste fraction). A 10% waste allowance covers normal cutting at edges and breakages during laying. For diagonal (45°) patterns or large-format tiles, increase the allowance to 15–20%.

Formula

Tile face area (m²) = Width × Height / 1,000,000
Tiles = (Area / Tile area) × (1 + waste%)

Tips for accurate results

1Always buy from the same production batch — colour lots vary between batches and matching later is very difficult.
2For diagonal (45°) laying patterns, use 15% waste instead of 10%.
3Large format tiles (600×600mm or bigger) require a flatter substrate — check floor levels carefully first.
4Bathroom wall tiles typically use a 3mm grout joint; floor tiles use 5mm minimum for drainage.
