Sand is bought by weight (tonnes, per tipper load) but used by volume (cubic metres in a mix or a fill). Converting between the two depends on the sand's bulk density, which changes with how loosely or tightly it is packed — loose tipped sand is noticeably lighter per cubic metre than sand that has settled or been compacted.
Getting this conversion wrong is one of the most common ordering mistakes on Nigerian sites: a quote for "5 tonnes" and a requirement for "3 cubic metres" are not automatically the same thing unless the density used to convert between them is stated.
