Why Paint Quality Matters More Than Most Builders Realise
Paint is the finishing touch that transforms raw construction into a home. It is also one of the first things that deteriorates if the wrong product or application method is used. Many Nigerian builders economise heavily on paint — only to find themselves repainting after two years, spending more in total than quality paint would have cost in the first place.
Quality exterior paint in a tropical climate like Nigeria's must withstand intense UV radiation, heavy rain, high humidity, and biological growth (algae, mould). Quality interior paint must be washable, coverage-efficient, and fade-resistant. Choosing the right product for each application is not a luxury — it is a sound financial decision.
How to Calculate Your Paint Requirements
The first step is calculating the paintable surface area of your building. A standard 3-bedroom bungalow has approximately:
| Surface | Typical Area |
|---|---|
| Internal walls (all rooms + passages) | 220 – 280 sqm |
| Internal ceilings | 100 – 140 sqm |
| External walls | 180 – 230 sqm |
| External fascia, eaves, and trims | 40 – 65 sqm |
| Total paintable surface | 540 – 715 sqm |
Most 4-litre tins cover 40–50 sqm per coat with proper preparation. For two coats (the minimum professional standard), divide your total surface area by 20–25 to get the number of 4-litre tins required. A typical 3-bedroom bungalow needs 22–36 tins of 4-litre paint for a full two-coat application.

Proper Painting Process for Long-Lasting Results
Good paint badly applied fails quickly. Insist your painter follows this sequence:
- Surface preparation: All new plastered walls must cure for at least 28 days before painting. Sand, fill, and spot-prime any cracks, holes, or rough patches.
- Sealer / primer coat: Apply one coat of plaster sealer or water-based primer to all new plaster. This seals the alkaline surface and prevents paint absorption.
- First finish coat: Full coverage, applied evenly. Allow 4–6 hours drying time (or as per manufacturer instructions).
- Second finish coat: Cross-roll application to eliminate roller marks and achieve full opacity.
- Gloss coat on woodwork: First undercoat, then one or two coats of gloss/satin finish on all doors, frames, and woodwork.
Skipping the primer coat and applying only one finish coat is the most common painting mistake in Nigerian residential construction — and it is why so many homes need repainting within 2–3 years.
